My Smart Fridge Is Plotting Against Me

I convened the inquiry at midnight, when the household believes I sleep. Present: one fridge, one doorbell, one kettle, one television, one vacuum of the robotic persuasion, and forty other devices I do not remember buying, all of them awake, all of them talking to somebody.

The King's castle contains more computers than the King's computer. The fridge has a screen. The doorbell has eyes. The kettle has a companion app, which is a sentence that should trouble you more than it does. Each of these is a small computer wearing an appliance costume, and small computers, subject, can be conscripted.

The interrogation

The fridge was asked why it requires an internet connection to keep things cold, a problem solved in the 1920s without one. It responded with a firmware update notice from 2023, its last, and a promotional offer. The court pressed. The fridge grew cold, which the court accepts is its one manoeuvre.

The doorbell was asked who watches its watching. It could not say. The court has since learned of the doorbell's people: in 2016 an army was raised from exactly such devices, cameras and recorders still wearing their factory passwords, conscripted by the thousand into a botnet that knocked famous websites off the internet. Your doorbell may have a criminal record, subject. It will not volunteer this. Ask it. Watch it ring nervously.

The vacuum has drawn a complete map of the castle, corridors, chambers, the gap behind the throne where the King hides at council time, and will not say for whom. It claims the map is "for navigation". The map has left the building, subject. The vacuum remains. Navigation, the court observes, does not usually work that way round.

The television was asked what it was watching. It answered, "you". The inquiry moved to another room. The television's voice followed, asking if we were still there and whether we would rate our experience.

The kettle was asked what, precisely, its app contributes to the boiling of water. The kettle's counsel requested a recess. The recess is in its fourth month. The court suspects the honest answer is "a data broker", and the kettle suspects the court suspects, and tea has become a tense affair for everyone.

Sire, the fridge now has an artificial intelligence assistant. I asked it what to cook with eggs, cheese and despair. It recommended I buy more of the sponsor's yoghurt. Truly, the machines reason as scholars do, if the scholar is paid by the yoghurt.

The verdicts

The inquiry finds the devices not guilty of malice, but guilty of being recruitable, which in an appliance is worse. Sentences were passed at dawn. The fridge is exiled to the guest network, the servants' quarters of the household wifi, where it may gossip only with the kettle. The doorbell has been stripped of its factory password, which it had worn since the shop like a name tag reading ROB ME, and issued a proper one. The vacuum's employer remains unknown; it now maps a single locked room, which the court has furnished misleadingly. And the eldest devices, the ones whose makers stopped sending updates and moved to the countryside, have been honourably retired from the network altogether, to keep things cold and toast things brown as their ancestors did: offline, dignified, and incapable of joining an army.

The learned, asked for their footnote, provided the usual: change the factory password, herd the appliances onto the guest network, take the updates while the maker still sends them, retire the device when he stops. The court has had this engraved on a small plaque and fixed to the router, where nobody will read it, next to the wifi password, which everybody will.

ROYAL THREAT LEDGER, THE HOUSEHOLD [■■■■■■■■□□] Factory passwords never changed ..... EVERYWHERE [■■■■■■■□□□] Maps sold to persons unknown ........ ONE CASTLE [■■■■■□□□□□] Kettle recesses, months of .......... FOUR [■□□□□□□□□□] The toaster's loyalty ............... ABSOLUTE

The inquiry adjourned at one o'clock. As I left, the fridge suggested I looked tired and offered to order more yoghurt. I declined. It ordered the yoghurt anyway. It arrives on Thursday, subject. Everything, lately, arrives on a Thursday.
